Regina/Johnny from PCBBuy, another Chinese PCB/PCBA manufacturer, posted these interesting photos along with a mysterious comment:

At present, we are testing the performance of soldermask ink… Just testing.

I reached out to her/him but instead of answering my questions they followed me on Twitter. :D I'm not entirely sure what to make of that but hopefully we will get some additional info soon.

Whether it's dot matrix/inkjet printing/dye sublimation, or something else, commenters pointed out the real question is if these images will survive reflow temperatures.

Anyways, if this technique really worked, it would open up a whole lot of possibilities to waste more time for the engineer-artist chimera in you.
