Vostok Labs created this 20/20 split that can be magnetically put together to become an ortholinear 40%. With a very elegant way to host hotswap sockets and help with handwiring.

This is one of the simplest ways to get into custom keyboards without dealing with complicated PCBs or expensive kits. You get full split ergonomics, or snap it together with magnets and run it as a compact 40% board – Vostok Labs.
